Work for Green Music Center, an arts and music venue at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, CA.
The client wanted the season to feel optimistic and alive, a celebration of music, art, and community during a challenging cultural moment. Something to show the world that despite all the reasons to feel down, we are still here, we're still creating, we're still celebrating that which makes us human.
To bring this vision to life, we explored loose hand drawn elements, sketch-like illustration, and loose and non-sacred type for the cover.
We went wild and loose first, then reeled the direction that was floating to the top into something agreeable for all audiences and stakeholders.
Our chosen direction evolved into a mosiac of shapes and colors that reflect Sonoma County's landscape and give a nod to the type of acts at the venue for the season. We chose vibrant colors to celebrate the cultures and vibrancy of the performers, and a choice to remove textures to help the form sing as well as keeping them modular and lighter to work with across different activations and branded photography interactions.
We design the book each year, so there are important through lines to keep in mind across each catologue. This manifests in subtle nods to previous years through color, similar graphic elements, and type that is consistent across each year's book and keeps edits light as dates and acts move around until the final hour for print.
